Understanding influence: how media language and visuals shape what we think, feel and consume | Zrozumieć wpływ: jak język i obrazy mediów kształtują nasze myśli, uczucia i konsumpcję

Media are constantly shaping our desires, emotions, and identity, but most people don’t even notice. By learning to read media language and images, you can take back control of many of your thoughts, feelings, and choices. Using discourse analysis and social semiotics, this presentation shows how to uncover deeper social meanings, hidden agendas, and the social and psychological effects of media, including production of consumer desire, fear, or shame. Focusing on commodification, i.e. the process of translating life into the logic of consumption, we will explore its language- and image-based mechanisms of influencing how we perceive health, appearance, human relationships etc.

This interactive and transdisciplinary workshop is an invitation to explore modernist networks from experimental writers to publishing houses that brought their works to diverse audiences. Through case studies of selected letters, which contributed to the publication of ground-breaking and transgressive works, it develops participants’ research and editorial skills by presenting the ways publishing correspondence can be navigated and interpreted. The workshop introduces the research project “Bloomsburians in Warsaw: Modernist publishing networks and the Bloomsbury Group in interwar Poland” (no. 2023/51/D/HS2/02041), funded by the National Science Centre, Poland (2024–2027).

In this short talk, I introduce the concept of creolization, first explaining its origins and meaning in linguistics, and then exploring how the term has been reinterpreted and expanded within cultural studies and literature. I also discuss how creolization has become a metaphor for cultural mixing, identity formation, and creativity in global contexts.

Horror loves hiding its monstrosity under velvet drapes: the subtle scent of decay gets muddled with the sweet taste of champagne and terrifying creatures wear the most handsome of disguises. This lecture explores the Gothic allure of luxury, from the silken refinement of Wilde’s dandies, through the perfumed chambers of the decadents, the aristocratic hungers of rich vampires and other upper-class parasites, ostentatious mansions that turn into labyrinths, to the sumptuous feasts of the culinary Gothic. By following the opulent trail of terror, we will contemplate if fear, much like excess, can be seen as desire taken too far.

False Friends in English: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach

With its status as a lingua franca, English serves as a meeting point for speakers from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In such a rich environment, ESL or EFL learners may occasionally encounter challenges, particularly when familiar-looking words turn out to have unexpected or misleading meanings: commonly known as false friends. If these words are not properly recognized, their use can result in situations ranging from amusing misunderstandings to socially awkward or demanding encounters.

This online event is part of an on-site workshop organized by the Omnilinguae Research Group and focuses specifically on the phenomenon of false friends. It explores their relevance for future language specialists working in fields such as teaching, translation, and cross-cultural communication. The project aims to foster open discussion while providing academic insight into this subtle but impactful aspect of language learning.

Odrażający!! trąd i trędowaci w literaturze i prasie amerykańskiej ostatnich dwóch stuleci czyli o tym jak słowa kształtują wykluczenie

Najstarsza znana wzmianka pisemna o trądzie pochodzi z około 600 roku p.n.e. (za WHO 2015). Choć dziś jest całkowicie wyleczalny, przez stulecia uznawano go za efekt boskiej kary za moralne zepsucie. Trędowaci byli izolowani i wykluczani, a samo słowo „trąd” stało się synonimem społecznego potępienia. Podczas krótkiego wykładu opowiem o tym, jak w Stanach Zjednoczonych, począwszy od XIX w., zmieniało się postrzeganie chorych i samej choroby. Jak wynika z analizy ponad 400 tekstów – od prasy po literaturę naukową – dawniej pojmowany w kategoriach klątwy, trucizny czy niszczycielskiej siły, dziś trąd częściej pojawia się w dyskursie jako przeciwnik, z którym warto i należy walczyć, co można odczytywać jako krok w kierunku przeciwdziałania stygmatyzacji tej choroby.

Monster Identity: Gothic tradition and modern narratives in Monster High

The presentation aims to analyze the ways in which the webseries Monster High implements
tradition alongside modernity. The web series explores the subject of literary traditions of the gothic genre and the cultural traditions present around the world by setting the story at a school where various creatures are able to interact and form friendships. The popularity of Monster High illustrates how modern culture influences the perception of otherness by encouraging young people to believe in themselves and celebrate their own uniqueness. As such Monster High constitutes an example of a franchise that attempts to bring together the past and the contemporary reality of what it means to be young.

The talk shows how linguists analyze linguistic data on a real example and illustrates step by step how an explanation is developed, tested and refined, ultimately challenging the viewers to continue doing so by drawing on data they can collect on their own. The dataset that is examined is made up of a handful of proper names that either take the definite article, e.g. the UK, the North Sea, the Thames, the Netherlands, or do not, e.g. Poland, Germany, England, London, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, The discussion is kept on a simple level, but it guides the viewers to developing a practical rule of article use they can both follow on a daily basis and further enhance on their own.

Designing for Every Mind: Applying Universal Design for Learning and Digital Tools to Support Second Language Acquisition in Students with Learning Disabilities

Inclusive education goes beyond removing barriers; it requires rethinking teaching to value diversity. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a framework for flexible, multimodal, and accessible language learning, supporting all students, including those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. This presentation explores how digital tools, integrated in a UDL-oriented approach, enhance second language acquisition through multisensory input, metacognitive reflection, and adaptive environments. Examples from the Inclusive Learning Project—a collaboration between Pegaso University (Italy) and the University of the National Educational Commission, Krakow (Poland)—show how inclusive, empathetic, and creative pedagogy fosters accessible, meaningful learning.

To, co jest zrozumiałe dla Australijczyka, może być bardzo mylące dla osoby z zewnątrz. Kto w końcu wie, czym jest dunny lub jak zajęta jest pijąca jaszczurka? Australian variety of English, although not as popular as the American or British varieties, is rich in colourful and vivid lingo that is in many ways connected to Australian flora, fauna, culture, and heritage. What is understandable for an Aussie may be very confusing for an outsider. Who, after all, knows what a dunny is or how busy a drinking lizard is? This and many more will be explained during a lecture with some practical tasks guaranteed.

Emotion as a factor in interpreting: What impact may it exert on the interpreting process? | Emocja czynnikiem w tłumaczeniu ustnym: Jaki wpływ może wywrzeć na proces przekładu?

Emotions are present in everyday life, and frequently influence one's decision-making process. However, the impact of emotion is insufficiently explored when it comes to interpreting. To what extent does it influence the process of interpreting? Could the interpreter improve their performance with such knowledge? The workshop will entail a short presentation on the topic of emotion and its relationship with the interpreter's work, with the possibility of asking questions after the lecture.

What is Dracula really like? He appeared in so many film adaptations that everyone imagines him slightly differently. On the basis of selected movies and TV series, we will investigate how the Count’s image has changed from a monster to a romantic lover, or sometimes a combination of both at the same time.
