The workshop “The Scroll Generation and the Eighth-Grade Exam: Neurodidactics and AI in Practice” is intended for primary school English teachers. Participants will learn about recent research showing how human brains are changing in the digital era and what this means for (foreign language) learning. The session will present neurodidactic strategies and practical ways to use ChatGPT in preparing students for the eighth-grade exam. The workshop is interactive, including a short lecture, discussion, and hands-on activities with ready-to-use classroom examples.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a framework for flexible, multimodal, and accessible language learning, supporting all students, including those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. This presentation explores how digital tools, integrated in a UDL-oriented approach, enhance second language acquisition through multisensory input, metacognitive reflection, and adaptive environments. Examples from the Inclusive Learning Project—a collaboration between Pegaso University (Italy) and the University of the National Educational Commission, Krakow (Poland)—show how inclusive, empathetic, and creative pedagogy fosters accessible, meaningful learning.

In this workshop, 7th- and 8th-grade students will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support independent English learning in preparation for the eighth-grade exam. AI will be presented as a versatile tool that can serve as a dictionary, proofreader, evaluator, work organizer, creator of exam tasks, and conversation partner. The interactive format will help students develop language skills and subsystems while building creativity and confidence in both speaking and writing. They will also learn about potential risks of overreliance on this technology, including the tool’s hallucinations (incorrect answers), excessive substitution of student effort, and online safety concerns, so that they can use AI wisely and responsibly.

During the session, participants will explore in practice the potential of large language models (LLMs) — including term extraction and terminology management, proofreading and post-editing, register adjustment, and the creative use of AI-assisted tools in more complex translation tasks. How to make the most of every text you set your eyes on. A short guide to effective, efficient and most importantly, joyful reading. Together, we are going to decipher some newspaper headlines, examine thoroughly one or two simple texts to uncover their hidden meaning and also, learn how to cope with unknown vocabulary.

Mapping Tender Encounters: A Mediation Game across Kraków

A city game designed to explore intercultural narratives and identity through movement, storytelling, and reflection inspired by Whiskey Tender and the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters (AIE) (Byram et al., 2009).

Participants (N=25 UKEN Erasmus students, N=25 Academic Circle, UAS, NYSA) take part in a city game - a story-based game that explores narrative crossings, identity, and transculturality. Inspired by Deborah Jackson Taffa’s Whiskey Tender, the game transforms Kraków into a symbolic map of intercultural encounters where players uncover hidden stories of migration, belonging, and self-reflection.

Each team heads towards checkpoints (each representing a chapter of Whiskey Tender). At each site, they perform reflective or creative micro-tasks inspired by AIE (Byram et al., 2009). Participants record their responses on separate Padlet virtual boards.

Both English spelling and English pronunciation may be quite challenging, so that how we spell a word is by no means a hint about how we actually pronounce it, at it can be rather unhelpful in terms of how a word is to be pronounced. The International Phonetic Alphabet allows us to avoid these problems. With a clear one-to-one correspondence between the symbol and sound it represents, IPA provides a means to have a direct and clear specification of a word pronunciation.
