This lecture explores the evolution of the female spy in British popular culture, tracing a lineage from Modesty Blaise to contemporary figures such as Villanelle and Eve Polastri. Emerging in 1963 as Peter O’Donnell’s comic-strip heroine, Modesty Blaise combined glamour, intelligence, and moral ambiguity, embodying both the emancipatory promise and the contradictions of postwar femininity. Operating outside state institutions yet guided by her own ethical code, Modesty redefined espionage as a domain where gender, power, and identity are continuously negotiated.

Wykład poświęcony jest ewolucji postaci kobiety-szpiega w brytyjskiej kulturze popularnej, od Modesty Blaise po współczesne bohaterki, takie jak Villanelle czy Eve Polastri. Gdy w 1963 roku Modesty Blaise, stworzona przez Petera O’Donnella, po raz pierwszy pojawiła się na łamach komiksu, połączyła w sobie urok, inteligencję i moralną niejednoznaczność, stając się symbolem zarówno wyzwolenia, jak i sprzeczności wpisanych w kobiecość epoki powojennej. Działając poza strukturami państwa, lecz kierując się własnym kodeksem etycznym, Modesty na nowo zdefiniowała świat szpiegostwa – jako przestrzeń, w której płeć, władza i tożsamość podlegają nieustannym negocjacjom i redefinicjom.

This lecture will be devoted to selected factors that have a (mostly negative) impact on contemporary music artists’ creative potential and their ability to make money from music without having to rely on non-music ventures. Of great interest to me will be the practices of the biggest record labels and streaming platforms on the American market, whose legal ramifications encouraged Iulian Anghelin to describe the US (and indirectly, global) music industry as a corporate oligopoly. Issues related to ownership of songs, clashes between artists and labels, and the often destructive role of streaming platforms and social media as essential tools for promoting and distributing music will be discussed as well. Using the examples of popular mainstream singers and songwriters such as Taylor Swift, I will argue that without a radical makeover of the currently existing model neither artists nor record labels will be able to set and realize ambitious creative goals and maintain financial stability.

Ten wykład będzie oświęcony wybranym czynnikom, które mają (przeważnie negatywny) wpływ na twórczy potencjał współczesnych artystów muzyki popularnej i ich możliwość utrzymywania się wyłącznie z muzyki. Szczególnie interesujące będą dla mnie praktyki największych wytwórni płytowych i platform streamingowych na rynku amerykańskim, których wymiar prawny skłonił Iuliana Anghelina do stwierdzenia, że amerykański (a pośrednio globalny) przemysł muzyczny funkcjonuje na zasadach korporacyjnego oligopolu. Omówię również kwestie związane z prawami do utworów muzycznych, konfliktami, jakie powstają między artystami i firmami, oraz często destrukcyjną rolą platform streamingowych i mediów społecznościowych jako głównych narzędzi dystrybucji i promocji muzyki. Na przykładzie karier takich popularnych artystów, jak Taylor Swift, będę broniła tezy, że jeśli nie dojdzie do radykalnych zmian obecnie istniejącego modelu, ani artyści, ani wytwórnie płytowe nie będą w stanie wyznaczać i realizować ambitnych celów twórczych i utrzymywać stabilności finansowej.

In the span of four years, DC Comics released three comic-book anthologies whose protagonists are Batman in the 2021 Batman: The World, Joker in the 2024 Joker: The World, and Superman in the 2025 Superman: The World. As the term “anthology” implies, Batman: The World, Joker: The World and Superman: The World are not uniform texts with single, unified plotlines; instead, they are both collections of short stories, all of which take place in different corners of the world. A prominent feature of the graphic novels in question is the fact that each short story has been created by artists from the country that Batman, Joker, or Superman is visiting in a particular story. Such collaborative and international authorships of anthologies allow for an in-depth analysis of cultural elements included by each team of artists. I will analyze the Polish portion of Batman’s, Joker’s, and Superman’s adventures as presented in three separate chapters of the three anthologies in order to highlight the choices made by Polish artists concerning cultural and historical elements they decided to include in their work and how those elements may affect reader’s perception of Polish culture and history. The analysis will cover both visual and narrative cultural elements included in each individual story.

W ciągu czterech lat DC Comics wydało trzy antologie komiksowe, których bohaterami są Batman w Batman: The World z 2021 roku, Joker w Joker: The World z 2024 roku oraz Superman w Superman: The World z 2025 roku. Jak sugeruje termin „antologia”, Batman: The World, Joker: The World i Superman: The World nie są jednolitymi tekstami z jedną, spójną fabułą; są to raczej zbiory opowiadań, których akcja rozgrywa się w różnych zakątkach świata. Cechą charakterystyczną omawianych opowiadań jest fakt, że każde z nich zostało stworzone przez artystów z kraju, który Batman, Joker lub Superman odwiedza w danej historii. Takie zbiorowe i międzynarodowe autorstwo antologii pozwala na dogłębną analizę elementów kulturowych uwzględnionych przez każdy zespół artystów. Moim zamiarem jest analiza polskiej części przygód Batmana, Jokera i Supermana, przedstawionej w trzech oddzielnych rozdziałach trzech antologii, aby podkreślić decyzje polskich artystów dotyczące elementów kulturowych i historycznych, które zdecydowali się uwzględnić w swojej twórczości, oraz jak te elementy mogą wpłynąć na postrzeganie polskiej kultury i historii przez czytelników. Analiza obejmie zarówno wizualne, jak i narracyjne elementy kulturowe zawarte w każdej z historii.

My workshop explores how idioms, memes, and jokes change meaning when translated between English and Polish. Participants will discover why some expressions lose their punch, others gain new shades of humour, and a few simply make no sense at all. Through real-life examples, mistranslations, and exercises, we will uncover the cultural and linguistic layers hidden behind everyday phrases and internet humour. The session aims to develop not only translation awareness but also linguistic curiosity and cultural references. Perfect for teenagers and young adults interested in languages, communication, and the fun side of meaning.

Moje warsztaty poświęcone są zmianom znaczenia idiomów, memów i żartów w tłumaczeniu z języka angielskiego na polski i odwrotnie. Uczestnicy dowiedzą się, dlaczego niektóre wyrażenia tracą lub zyskują nowe poziomy humoru, a inee po prostu nie mają żadnego sensu. Dzięki przykładom z życia, błędnym tłumaczeniom i ćwiczeniom odkryjemy kulturowe i językowe warstwy ukryte za codziennymi zwrotami i humorem internetowym. Sesja ma na celu nie tylko rozwijanie świadomości tłumaczeniowej i ciekawości językowej, ale także zgłębienie odniesień kulturowych. Idealna dla nastolatków i młodych dorosłych zainteresowanych językami, komunikacją i grami słownymi opartymi na znaczeniu słów.

Warsztat w języku polskim i angielskim.

Patrząc na przekład w ujęciu tradycyjnym, zwykle zastanawiamy się nad kwestiami takimi jak: etapy procesu tłumaczenia, wierność, ekwiwalencja, nieprzekładalność, techniki stosowane w trudnych przypadkach, kompetencje tłumaczy, ich błędy. Jednak poza typowymi problemami pojawiają się ciekawostki, przypadki hybryd na granicy przekładu i twórczości własnej, zaskakujące adaptacje, a ostatnio coraz częściej wpływy AI. Podczas naszego wystąpienia przedstawimy powyższe zagadnienia, proponując uczestnikom dyskusję na temat kilku tekstów, których przekład wykracza poza poszukiwanie ekwiwalentów językowych, a nawet kulturowych. Spróbujemy określić granice tego, co współcześnie można nazwać przekładem w odniesieniu do kilku teorii z zakresu badań nad przekładem.

Considering translation in the traditional sense, we usually address issues such as: stages of the translation process, fidelity, equivalence, untranslatability, techniques used in difficult cases, translators’ competences, and their mistakes. However, apart from typical problems, the field of translation encompasses also curiosities, hybrid cases on the border between translation and creation, surprising adaptations, and – recently – the increasing influence of AI. During our presentation, we will focus on the above issues and invite participants to discuss several texts whose translation goes beyond the search for linguistic or even cultural equivalents. We will attempt to define the boundaries of what can be called translation today in relation to a few theories in the field of translation studies.
