Imagine: you want to rent an apartment in the US, but in the UK, the landlord says that you are renting a flat. Later, you buy a pair of trainers in the UK, but your friends in the US are quick to correct you, saying that you bought sneakers. In this interactive workshop and lecture, students will encounter and analyze differences in words (and slang) used in the US and the UK. We will also explore why these differences exist.

Wyobraź sobie: chcesz wynająć „apartment” w USA, ale w Wielkiej Brytanii właściciel twierdzi, że wynajmujesz „flat”. Później kupujesz parę „trainers” w Wielkiej Brytanii, ale Twoi znajomi w USA szybko Cię poprawiają, mówiąc, że kupiłeś „sneakers”. What kinds of creatures inhabit the unknown? What is lurking in the shadows? What kinds of beasts might dwell in the dark depths of the sea? This workshop invites participants to travel in time and visit Anglo-Saxon England (5th-11th century) and look at various creatures, be it simple animals or terrifying monsters, hiding in Old English texts and on the pages of medieval manuscripts.

Jakie potwory zamieszkują nieznane tereny? Co czai się wśród cieni? Jakie stwory mogą kryć się w ciemnych morskich głębinach? Niniejszy warsztat zaprasza uczestników do podróży do czasów Anglo-Sasów w Anglii (V-XI wiek). Wspólnie spojrzymy na rózne stworzenia, czy to zwierzęta czy straszliwe potwory, które kryją sie w staroangielskich tekstach i na kartach średniowiecznych manuskryptów.

What is Poland today? How do stereotypes and ideas about the country compare to the reality? As it has become an increasingly important player in Europe and the world, with more people visiting or even making it their home than ever before, for many, Poland continues to be full of surprises. Taking an interactive, sometimes serious and sometimes irreverent approach, we will consider cultural differences and expectations, discuss how Poles see themselves and how they are seen from the outside, and reflect on how we can best explain what makes Poland tick.

Czym jest dzisiejsza Polska? Jak stereotypy i wyobrażenia o tym kraju mają się do rzeczywistości? Wraz ze wzrostem znaczenia Polski w Europie i na świecie, coraz większą liczbą osób odwiedzających ten kraj lub nawet osiedlających się w nim, dla wielu Polska nadal pozostaje pełna niespodzianek. Przyjmując interaktywne, czasem poważne, a czasem niekonwencjonalne podejście, rozważymy różnice kulturowe i oczekiwania, omówimy, jak Polacy postrzegają samych siebie i jak są postrzegani z zewnątrz, oraz zastanowimy się, jak najlepiej wyjaśnić, co sprawia, że Polska funkcjonuje tak, a nie inaczej.

Throughout history, humanity has sought a common voice. In different eras and corners of the world, certain languages emerged as bridges of understanding — lingua francas. Out of the longing for linguistic unity, artificial languages were also born. Yet none of them ever embraced the entire globe. The lecture will take us on a journey through the history of English — from a local tongue to the first language in history to become a tool of global communication.

Na przestrzeni dziejów ludzkość szukała wspólnego głosu. W różnych epokach i zakątkach świata pojawiały się języki, które stawały się mostami porozumienia, tzw. lingua franca. Z pragnienia jedności rodziły się także języki sztuczne. Żaden z nich jednak nie zdołał objąć całego globu. Wykład zabierze nas w podróż przez dzieje angielszczyzny – od języka lokalnego do pierwszego w historii narzędzia komunikacji globalnej.
